First things first, what is a "beefmaster"?, you ask. Beefmasters are a breed of cattle established by the famed Lasater ranch in the 1930's, made up of brahman, hereford and shorthorn influences. The breed is founded on 6 essential qualities: disposition, fertility, weight, conformation, hardiness, and milking ability. Any animal failing to meet all 6 traits are culled without hesitation. Beefmasters are medium-framed catlle with a high percentage yield of red meat and very little waste. These cattle are efficient grazers, allowing the grower to maximize the number of animals per acre, while minimizing the amount of forage wasted on the growth of excess hide and bone. Skillet Fork Farm specializes in purebred beefmaster and beefmaster cross cattle. Bred both for the sales ring and the dinner table, their docile, easy going nature make them ideal for the hard working farm family. Calving ease, hardiness, and milking ability make them suitable for farmers and ranchers tied down by public work. Low birth weights and high weaning weights testify to the mothering ability of the beefmaster breed. Good pasture and mothers milk are all thats required to maintain a beefmaster herd.
Take a look at our herd and you will notice a strong Lasater Ranch influence throughout. Most of our cows are granddaughters of the famed Lasater bull L BAR 5502. Rating in the top 15 bull in three of the six essential categories. Other legendary names include:
